A literary celebration of ‘China Court’ by Rumer Godden

  • Lamb House West Street Rye, England, TN31 7ES United Kingdom (map)

Join us for a very special Christmas celebration of Rumer Godden's novel China Court,
at the beautiful National Trust Lamb House in Rye where the author once lived!

Please join us to celebrate the publication of the brand new Manderley Press edition of Rumer Godden's novel China Court.

Rumer Godden lived for a time in Lamb House in Rye - which was also home to authors Henry James and E.F. Benson - and we are thrilled to be hosted by the National Trust to celebrate the author and her writing.

Panel discussion | 2-4pm

We are delighted to welcome a panel of experts and enthusiasts to chat all things Rumer Godden, including writers, as well as a curator, publisher and literary content creator. We will aim to cover some of Rumer Godden’s novels, the inspiration she found in the houses where she wrote and/or set her novels, and the time she spent living in Lamb House itself - plus of course, any questions we have time for from the audience!

Taking part in the panel event will be:

  • Anne Hall - author of Four French Holidays, and an expert on Rumer Godden's novels inspired by France

  • Triin Vihur - literary content creator and blogger at Wordchild

  • Kirsty Mitchell - National Trust Collections Officer and specialist on the history of Lamb House and Rumer Godden’s time there

  • Rebeka Russell - Manderley Press Publisher

Christmas Card workshop | 1-4pm

Running alongside the panel discussion will be a separate workshop with with Amanda Cardoso - open to the public and free of charge to anyone visiting Lamb House (including anyone also attending the ticketed panel event).

Amanda Cardoso is an artist and printmaker whose work is inspired and shaped by the beauty and wildlife of the South Downs and the coast.

Her card-making workshop will encourage visitors to use a decoupage-style technique to create a card with a mount, using papers and designs from the endpapers of Rumer Godden’s book China Court and also elements of the wallpaper the author chose for the upstairs staircase in Lamb House. Visitors can take home their card and envelope!

Christmas shopping

There will also be chance to get ahead with your festive shopping - Manderley Press books, cards, gift wrap and signed art prints will be available to purchase before and after the panel discussion (alas, credit card payments only!).
